Mods:

lengthened the bodice pieces by 3"

lengthened the bodice lining pieces by 2"

made view c without the asymmetry

size 10 without an fba - in fact, I had to take in a bit at the underarms.

raw hem

Fabric: textured cotton jersey from Nuttall's

I love knit dresses. I love knits in general, but wearing a knit dress is like getting away with wearing pajamas all day and it looks so put together. This pattern was easy to make with straightforward instructions and very few pieces. I'm SO glad that I checked a few blogs (like Erica's) for a pattern review otherwise I wouldn't have known to lengthen the bodice pieces (I didn't lengthen the skirt). This is one of the very, very few times I didn't make a muslin. I'm 5'9" for reference and the elastic hits right at my natural waist. Next time I'll try to omit the lining and see if I can eke a dress out of just one yard.

Obviously it's feast or famine here, folks! I've been sewing a lot, but not finishing things. Then my mom stopped by. She was appalled (horrified?) by my piles of unfinished projects. I think she seriously regretted asking what I had been making. "Look mom! This is the back left piece of a dress. I'm not sure where the rest is. WAY cute, right??" As soon as she left, I dug in.

Next-up: Renfrew top, Darling Ranges muslin, boxy tops and possibly some knitting.
Fabric: cotton voile from Gorgeous Fabrics that I dyed here.

My thoughts? I love this pattern. The instructions were clear. It's super cute and versatile. The fabric, on the other hand, was kind of a nightmare. It's so delicate that I ripped my first collar in half. I'm terrified that Binks is going to shred it, so I won't be wearing it around the house much.

As it gets warmer, this piece is going to be really fun to style. I picture it with white jeans and sandals. Or black shorts with these. Or over a maxi dress?

Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17233638417331880529noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2133250985722284887.post-73503539818375398122012-02-04T12:46:00.000-07:002012-02-04T12:46:32.506-07:00Best Laid PlansIf I always listened to that little voice in the back of my head questioning my fabric and pattern choices, then nothing would get done. But this time I listened. I was working on the PussyBow Blouse. The fit was perfected and I was ready to go. Then I looked at my Pinterest sewing inspiration board and something else took shape.

I used the pattern as a sloper and made the adjustments I envisioned. Now there's a back yoke, an inverted box pleat, a lengthened front, short sleeves and I'm contemplating pockets. If all goes well it's going to be fabulous. I'm going to fit one more muslin, then cut into this: a voile from Gorgeous Fabrics.

I dyed it last summer and absolutely love the color. I can't rave enough about Dharma's Procion dyes.

The bodice was really close to a perfect fit, but I noticed excess fabric above the bust near the armhole. I get the same issue with ready-to-wear. So I pinched out 3/4" from the shoulder and tapered it to the bust, then slash and spread the pattern to move the fullness to the side dart. That adjustment caused a ripple effect and I had to lengthen the collar pieces as well. In hindsight, I should have cut a size smaller and done an FBA for a similar fit. I also moved the dart down 1/4."

I'm trying not to get antsy. I get really impatient because there are thousands of things I want to sew right now. But it's going to be worth it.Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17233638417331880529noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2133250985722284887.post-24851689763134544662012-01-31T11:27:00.000-07:002012-01-31T13:25:34.015-07:00Finished: HP Torque Tops

Pattern: HP 1130 Weekend Triple Torque Knit Top - Wrap with elbow-length sleeves

Mods: cut a size 10, but straightened the body out so the waist was more like a
12. significantly reduced the armhole size. adjusted sleeve to fit into
cap. lengthened sleeve an inch.

Fabric: 11 oz. rayon jersey in soft light green from Gorgeous Fabrics.

Cost: I was mailed a very generous yard, so this top was only about $10.

I may just count this a wadder. There's tons of potential. There really is, but I'm not thrilled with the outcome. I was constantly adjusting the shirt to make it look normal in pictures. I think the over-sized fit works with the twisted hem top, but not this one. The shoulders and arms are too big and the wrap pattern pieces need to be adjusted. It's also too long. I may try again with a size 8 and make some other adjustments. The other problem is that I cannot hem this fabric! I've tried every size of twin needle, but it's not havin' it.

So what's next?? I've had it with knits for the time being, so I'm leaning towards a woven top. I also have lots of small knitting projects that I've been wrapping up, so I'll post those soon, too.
Eric and I took a long weekend and headed south with friends. Way south. Lee's Ferry is a mecca for waterfowl hunters and fishermen that's in the middle of nowhere. While the guys spent their days on the river, we, the wives, went on our own adventure. The most notable one being the Tuba City dinosaur tracks. The experience was slightly sketchy and I have no idea what kind of dinosaurs the tracks really came from - we were told t-rex, triceratops and pterodactyl - but it was neat all of the same.
I love Indian jewelry and Zuni pieces in particular, so I was super excited to find that middle ring at a trading post in Cameron. It fits on my pinky. I'm assuming the one on the right is Navajo. I've never seen anything like it.
The only review that I could find for this top mentioned that the armholes were big. Given the amount of effort that went into making my Hot Patterns sleepwear look normal, I was not surprised by the strange sizing. The blue knit top is a slouchy fitting favorite of mine. Obviously there was work to be done. I cut out a size 10 and ended up with something closer to a 12, but with the armholes drastically reduced.

Alright, alright. It's a bit anti-climatic on the hanger, but believe me that it is cute on (I'm too lazy/disheveled to model tonight). I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT IT. I think I'll use a grey rayon blend that I picked up for cheap at Designer's Resource for the real deal. But don't hold me to that.

There are a few sweaters that have been in my discard/frog/giveaway pile for years, so I got started on those as well. Frogging is kind of an ordeal as the yarn has to be soaked to get the kinks out, then dried and rewound. The buttonless Tangled Yoke Cardigan has finally met its end.

I actually can't go that long without a project and certainly can't watch tv without keeping my hands busy, so I made fingerless gloves for my mom and and a pair for my sil. These are my small wins.
They are both made up of the slubby goodness that is Manos del Uruguay Wool Classica. The pattern is 75 Yard Malabrigo Fingerless Mitts though I used a bit more yarn than that.
Before the Anhinga fiasco, I was inspired by Lauren of Lladybird to organize my fabric and patterns, which is turning out to be a much bigger job than anticipated. My patterns are slowly being uploaded and tagged in a PRIVATE Flickr set. I didn't want to take pictures of my fabric too, so I just cut swatches, wrote down the measurements and called it good. I have some really great pieces that I'm excited to use up.

Now off to tackle some tees! Wish me luck.

*Sadly, I'm not exaggerating that much.Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17233638417331880529noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2133250985722284887.post-37596981893311070612012-01-10T09:35:00.000-07:002012-01-10T09:35:18.927-07:00Planning: Tops & TeesThanks so much for all the kind words about my last couple of projects! I've been wearing my gray dress non-stop.

So I guess I need a sewing plan. Every time I go to my closet I reach for the same tops - UO v-neck poly-blend tees - and the same pants - old, holey jeans. Oookay. I have nice stuff, but I wear what's comfortable since I'm not in a situation where I necessarily need to dress up. In an effort to look slightly more put together I'm going to sew some stylish tops that are comfortable. That means using knits! I have a huge stash of knit fabric because I'm a hoarder and cannot resist rayon jersey. I'll make a couple of woven tees, too.

Here are the patterns that I want to sew immediately:

Not too intense, right? Any words of advice? I know a few of you have sewn from these patterns...

In knitting news, Anhinga is almost done. I just need to sew on the sleeves. Yay! I should make accessories or finish up some old projects next, but of course I want to make another sweater and that sweater is the Riot Yoke Pullover. I know, I know. It's a bit much, but I love it. I don't have the yarn I want to use yet, so maybe I will finish a cowl or some socks in the meantime.Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17233638417331880529noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2133250985722284887.post-25283166499612337292012-01-07T16:00:00.000-07:002012-01-09T07:36:49.532-07:00Finished: The Sweatshirt Dress
I kind of just made a dress out of my cat's blanket.

You see, I've had this fabric for a while now and every time I'd wash and dry it Binker would curl up into the warm fleece and take a nap. I'd move on to something else. The huge swath of fabric finally needed to be used. It took up a lot of room.

Pattern: Simplicity 2054 - by Cynthia Rowley. I cut out view B with the cowl in a size 12.

Mods: lengthened the waist seam by 1", swayback by 1", took out 1.5" from the back center seam, took an additional 1.5" from the top center back to prevent gaping, scooped out the neckline significantly.

Fabric: sweatshirt fleece that I bought years ago from Denver Fabrics.

I'm happy with the dress. It's comfortable and fits pretty well. As you can see, all of my stressing about the back fitting was for naught as there is still bunching and weirdness. Next time I'll just cut it on the fold. This was a blast to sew. It was super quick and I love, love, love sewing with a twin needle. Someday I'll get a coverstitch machine, but for now it's pretty satisfying.Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17233638417331880529noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2133250985722284887.post-24794388148786606512012-01-04T18:00:00.000-07:002012-01-07T20:59:16.530-07:00Tackling SwaybackI was told recently of two things that make a garment look homemade - seams not matching up and a center back seam on knits. I completely agree with the seam matching and do a fair amount of basting to make sure that things are lined up correctly. But is there truth to the center back seam myth? Doesn't that seam allow for a better fit? I've been working on Simplicity 2054, a simple knit dress with no center seams. When I made my first muslin there was quite a bit of pooling due to my swayback.

I lengthened the waist by an inch, then pinched that entire inch out at the center back. Now I'm left with a subtle indentation. The seam no longer matches up with the fold. I read somewhere that I could just straighten the line back out and it would work out fine. Not true! I did this and ended up with a cowl above my tush. So in the end, I decided to cut two pieces for the back to maintain the fit. I also ended up taking in 1.25" towards the top of the seam to account for my rounded shoulders. Otherwise there's a lot of gaping.

What are your thoughts? Is the gigantic pool of fabric that will occur due to my swayback really acceptable? Is the center seam worse? Maybe I've over-fitted the dress? Is it supposed to be loose enough to hide my bum AND poor posture??
A few months ago, my sister-in-law pinned this skirt:

{source}

It's way cute and way over $200. I told her I'd make her one, but made one for myself first as a muslin. It actually turned out completely different than the inspiration picture because the fabric refused to gather - it has SO much body - and I didn't use a high-waisted contoured band. I like the original skirt so much that I'll try again at some point. The pictures do not do the fabric justice. It has a beautiful sheen.

Pattern: I used two 18" x 30" rectangles for the skirt and I can't remember the measurement for the waistband. For the best fit, I need a contoured waistband. This one gapes a bit. I was going to use Simplicity 2215, but the waistband is just a rectangle and the pleats are asymmetrical.

My priorities include school and family, but I also want to flesh out my little home here. I know very few crafty people in real life and sincerely appreciate the feedback and support received by being a part of online sewing and knitting communities.

I'm going to worry less about offending people, get more comfortable with writing, not sew things just because the blogosphere is going absolutely apeshit over them (those projects generally do not work out for me), sew with a plan (SWAP!), knit without constant frogging and over-analyzing...

This is getting out of hand. I'm going to sew and knit a lot, which should result in more successful FO's. That's it.

So happy holidays, happy new year and I'll be back in a few hours with a skirt.

My Ravelry projects page was looking pretty sparse, so I decided to dig through boxes and drawers to find all of my knitting works-in-progress. There are quite a few things that have been wrongfully abandoned - including single socks. I LOVE handknit socks. Anyway, I'll be finishing up a variety of knits and featuring them here.

Yeah, yeah. I'm working on my Clovers. I fixed one thing and made another much worse. My latest round of alterations resulted in a huge back dart. I'm figuring it out. Slowly.

I'm just about done posting pictures of my bottom half in tight pants. Don't worry!

This isn't my first time sewing pants. I've made jeans. But non-stretch jeans are significantly different than stretchy cigarette pants. These have been really tough to fit mainly because of my muslin fabric choices.

Round 2 was sewn up in mystery material from Joann's that I swear had something about "reversible jeggings" on the fabric bolt. It's the stretchiest of stretchy material and so incredible comfortable. I have enough left over to make these leggings once this Clover business is over with.

Anyway, I altered the pattern by doing a full butt adjustment and took out 1" horizontally from the front and back pieces. I also brought the legs in quite a bit. When I first tried these on they barely fit, but by the end of the day - yes, I wore them all day - they were perfect! But I still let the legs back out a bit for the final pair. The sides were really bunchy and weird, so I straightened the hip curve just a touch on both pieces.

Oh boy. Round 3 is in periwinkle corduroy with no stretch. I'm not entirely sure why I thought that would be a good idea, but here we are. I'm not even going to show you the back because it reminds me of sausage casings. For this muslin I slashed and spread [more] the back crotch area thinking that I would have some more room for my tush. Not the case! I still have diagonal wrinkles and tightness. Obviously it will look different and better in a stretch fabric, but the extra room is definitely needed. I did another FBA and am hoping for the best. The front crotch is still kind of weird too, but I think if I take in a bit more at the center front seam it will be fixed.

At this point I'm just going to go for it. No more muslins. I've enjoyed the process because I LOVE messing around with fit and patterns, but it's time to move on. I'm still using mustard corduroy, but I also found some cute, stretchy lightweight denim in my stash that I might use up as well.

I've been knitting my little heart out and Kaide is almost finished! The front pieces need to be blocked and then it's just seaming and the collar that's left. Hooray! So expect to see some exciting stuff here in the next week.Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17233638417331880529noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2133250985722284887.post-56168539889750858782011-11-09T19:08:00.000-07:002011-11-09T19:13:47.350-07:00Miss ScarletToday I shipped off a couple of dresses that I made for my niece.

In order to use Colette's fit guide correctly, I needed to figure out my problem areas. The diagonal lines across my butt and pooling underneath indicates that a full butt adjustment is needed. The waist and hips fit great, but the legs are suuuper baggy. I like my pants tight! There were frown lines by my crotch, so I pinched out an inch at the center front seam.

That looks better, right? I'll also do a slight adjustment for my knock knees. I'm still undecided on the length. I think these will be relatively high-waisted and if that's the case then I can wear them with flats. But I mostly think they should be worn with heels. I lengthened the pattern by 2 7/8" and have taken up a 5/8" hem. I think they need to be a touch shorter.

Any thoughts or suggestions?Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17233638417331880529noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2133250985722284887.post-49270638215343240132011-11-05T08:29:00.000-06:002011-11-05T08:43:46.644-06:00I just want to knit.

Lavender of threadsquare kindly tagged me with the Versatile Blogger Award. I've been racking my brain trying to come up with seven things. Here we go:

1. I met my husband when I was 19. I worked at a fishing tackle shop and he needed an ice auger. It was love at first sight.

2. My blog name is misleading. I am a much better knitter than seamstress, but I think it has something to do with the risk factor. In knitting, you can unravel a whole sweater and get that yarn back if things go awry. With sewing there is no looking back and sometimes that scares me.

3. My cat Binks, the Binxiest of all the Binkertons, is one of the great loves of my life.

4. I was born and raised in Utah and almost 30 years later I still haven't made it out. Sure, we go on vacation, but I haven't lived anywhere else. This used to bother me, but I'm proud to say that I've been to all of the state's National Parks multiple times, hiked the Boulder Mountains, fished Causey Reservoir, rock-hounded Topaz Mountain, tagged along on a crane hunt in Vernal and have been everywhere else in between. It's a beautiful state and I'm grateful my husband's hobbies have taken me places I wouldn't have ventured on my own.

5. I love bright colors. Like, I've really had to restrain myself when it comes to home decor, but our house is still pretty saturated. For example, my sewing room is chartreuse. I also love buying loud yarn and fabric, but I mostly wear natural, muted colors. Funny, huh?

6. I have a pretty sick sense of humor and love to laugh. I read web comics daily, have been obsessed with Dibert since I was 12, love funny movies and [good] stand-up comedy.

7. I love to cook! I'm not amazing by any means, but I'll tackle any recipe and love trying new things. Lately we've been eating a lot of carnitas because I've been trying out different variations.

I'm really proud of this one. It fits nicely (after some serious stretching and blocking). I wouldn't mind another Beatnik in a bright color with stockinette sleeves instead of moss stitch. I was pretty thorough in my note-taking, so if you want to read specifics go to my Ravelry page here.

I used a different weight yarn than called for, different sized needles and knit the smallest size. That was wrong of me. I rarely knit a gauge swatch and when I do I kind of stretch it out and manipulate it to fit whatever it's supposed to be. Weird, I know. So here's a kind reminder to myself that I do not have a 32" bust and that I should always knit a gauge swatch. It's totes worth it.
Here are a couple of shoddy pictures of fabrics that I have in my stash. I don't really have a plan other than if I cut into something this fall it better be one of these fabrics or something teal.
I was supposed to head south this weekend, but unexpected events are taking me north for a little while instead. I won't be able to sew, but I'll get a lot of knitting done. Like, Kaide better be finished. I'm sick of talking about it.Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17233638417331880529noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2133250985722284887.post-63955211573866032282011-10-11T09:56:00.000-06:002011-10-11T09:57:01.650-06:00RecoveryI'm still recovering from the weekend. I lost one night of sleep because I was so excited for the Sewing Summit and another couple of nights due to watching movies (That's another one of my favorite things - movies. Has anyone else seen Incendies? OMG.)

The Sewing Summit was amazing. I learned so much and met some super-talented, friendly, incredible girls. I walked away from the experience inspired, motivated and overwhelmed! I'm also going to re-think how and what I sew and attempt some more difficult pieces.

It was so fun for me to not only meet, but hang out with sewing bloggers that I've been following for years. I was able to spend a lot of time with Lavender and Suriah. We went thrifting, talked about sewing techniques (I never get to do that) and enjoyed a few good meals. Lavender's Rooibos is so beautiful in person. It fits her perfectly. I also met Sunni, another local, who was wearing her fabulous Clover pants. Gertie is hilarious and I like how the classes were a bit unstructured and fun.

Gertie! She's kind of a big deal.

Speaking of Clover pants, that sewalong has started and I'm not even sure I have fabric for a muslin! I think there's some white stretch twill somewhere on my craft cave floor. For my final pair I'm using some stretchy mustard corduroy. Does that alarm you? I was going to pair them with a white, tucked-in, button-up OR a slouchy knit sweater.
Pattern: Tiny Pocket Tank (Highly recommended!)

Mods: Size 2 with a 3/4" FBA and an exposed bias trim. This is the first tank I made and initially thought it was too small, so I threw away the traced off pattern. Huge mistake because I would like fifteen more.
It took me maybe thirty minutes. Why do I out off simple tasks? And it's not like that's my first zipper either. I've installed my fair share.

The Sewing Summit is this weekend.

I'm a bit nervous, but mostly excited. Since I'm a local I decided to just go on Saturday. I've registered for two blogging/social media/photography classes and two technique classes. I'm sure I'll learn a lot and hopefully meet some new friends! I feel quite isolated in my creative hobbies and as a result mistakenly think that my interests are weird.

Besides feeling anxious about upcoming events, I've been putting together fall/winter sewing and knitting plans. Whenever I do this the plan snowballs. I'm trying to really limit myself and be realistic. I'm thinking about sewing two small collections, four to fives pieces each. One will be black, white, grey and teal. The other will consist of browns, mustard and oranges.

My stash isn't completely out of hand, but over the years I've acquired a collection of fabric and yarn. I have several fabrics that I'll be using in my mini-collections, but there is a teal wool crepe (for a dress) and teal coating that will be purchased shortly. I think it's a really pretty, flattering color so I'm excited to add it to my closet!

I'm trying to finish Kaide as soon as possibly because I'm already losing steam and want to start something else. The first sleeve is halfway done. Oooh yeah, I have a long way to go. As a public knitter I have this conversation often:
